Equine-Facilitated Psychotherapy has emerged as a powerful experiential approach that combines psychotherapy with the relational and emotional responsiveness of horses. Many clients describe EFP as uniquely impactful because it moves therapy beyond conversation alone and into embodied, real-time experience.

At the same time, the field remains scientifically and professionally underdeveloped in important respects. Research on EFP is promising but limited. Different models may use entirely different philosophies, terminology, training standards, and therapeutic techniques while all operating under similar labels such as “equine-assisted therapy” or “equine-facilitated psychotherapy.” This creates confusion for clients, researchers, insurers, and mental health professionals alike.

As the field evolves, the challenge is to balance two truths simultaneously:
EFP can be profoundly transformative for some people AND the field still requires stronger scientific validation, clearer professional standards, and ongoing critical evaluation.

This blog aspires to embrace Two-Eyed Seeing within a Community of Practice grounded in curiosity, humility, and relationship. We believe understanding grows through relationship with difference. We seek to create spaces that invite different ways of knowing. In doing so, we hope to learn from the strengths of many voices—including practitioners, researchers, lived experience experts, knowledge keepers, and the horses themselves.

Most of what appears here will likely remain first drafts. The goal is not certainty but curiosity; not arriving, but continuing the journey.
