SOURCES OF INSPIRATION FOR EQUINE PRESENCE
At its core, Equine Presence’s theoretical orientation is a relational phenomenological orientation grounded in an embodied horse-human encounter
Just as horses can make abstract relational theory physically visible and experienced, Equine Presence’s theoretical orientation has emerged from Dr. Paul’s engagement, immersion and reflection on many sources of inspiration.
THINKERS
The most significant influence that foundationally inspired and guided me was Dr. Veronica Lac of The HERD Institute. Many other thinkers have influenced and inspired this orientation, including: Martin Buber, Jakob von Uexküll, Martin Heidegger, Maurice Merleau-Ponty, Eugene Gendlin, Carl Rogers, Hans-Georg Gadamer, Max van Manen, Paul Ricoeur, Emmanuel Levinas, Viktor Frankl, and Irvin D. Yalom.
TEACHINGS
Additionally the teachings of Dr. Paul’s Métis cultural community and the influence of the writings of many Elders and Knowledge Keepers, such as Albert Marshall and Robin Wall Kimmerer, have been essential to the emergence of Equine Presence. In particular, wâhkôhtowin, interconnectedness, Two-Eyed Seeing, relational accountability, interspecies relationality and reciprocity.
FOUNDATIONS
The influential philosophical and psychological orientations include: Relational Phenomenology, Hermeneutics, Existentialism, Gestalt Phenomenological traditions, Humanistic Psychology, Relational Ontology, Attachment/Relational Psychology, and Umwelt.
